After much negotiations, James Gunn is returning to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for the 3rd instalment. Now, the movie is back at the top of Marvel’s list of productions.
According to Production Weekly, the team has set a production start date for February 21st (Per Screen Rant):
Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will reportedly begin in February of 2021. We have reached out to Disney for comment on the report. With Gunn working on Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad, which is set to release the year production would begin on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., that’s likely the main reason early 2021 was chosen as a planned date to begin filming the third movie involving the cosmic team.
With Gunn set to direct and produce the ‘Suicide Squad’ reboot for DC, that is his number one priority at the time. Marvel also has a plethora of films planned through to 2021. With ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ in this years plans, the 2021 production date gives the studios some time to prepare for what is next for the Guardians.
Now that Gunn and the Guardians have mended ties, it is on to the 3rd instalment of an already successful franchise. Gunn’s return was a crucial and pivotal move because many of the main characters including Dave Bautista, were threatening leaving the film after his departure.
