Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter moved his Shawn Carter Foundation into new territory this weekend. This month, the foundation’s inaugural weekend fundraiser raised $6 million for college students.
Hosted in Hollywood, Florida, the weekend kicked off with a poker tournament that included Jay-Z, Yo Gotti and more. In the end, SoftBank Group CEO Marcelo Claure beat out Jay-Z and Yo Gotti for the $500,000 pot. He then donated his earnings back to the foundation.
On Saturday, the foundation held its first-ever black-tie gala. Robin Roberts acted as the event’s master of ceremonies. In addition, Alicia Keys provided live music for the night’s festivities. Beyoncé, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, Tyler Perry, Yo Gotti, Dapper Dan, Fabolous, Normani and many more also attended the gala.
Throughout the night, the foundation raised money for scholarship funds, college prep workshops, bus tours and study abroad opportunities. As described, “The mission of the Shawn Carter Foundation is to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning.” To learn more about their efforts, visit the Shawn Carter Foundation website.
