The NBA offseason has become a nurturing ground for players looking to speak out on social issues. Many have spoken about gun violence and police brutality since the beginning of the offseason. Some have taken other actions, as well.
Count Iman Shumpert as the latest player to take a stand. The Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard took to Instagram on Wednesday to declare his support for the stand that 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (as well as many others) have taken.
In addition to voicing his support, Shump declared that he will be donating money to organizations working to find solutions to the police brutality problem. The Instagram post came on the heels of the latest high-profile shooting of an unarmed, black man (Terence Crutcher) by the police.
Shump’s instagram post, including a picture of his newborn daughther, included the following statement:
“For each steal I’m going to donate money and time towards a foundation striding to improve the struggle between the badge and the citizen. I challenge all sponsors and athletes to match these proceeds to contribute to the cause helping families affected by all the killings leaving families and communities traumatized.”

Kudos to Iman Shumpert for putting some money where his mouth is. The more high-profile celebrities, including NBA athletes, lend their support to this cause, the more likely it is that we can find a solution.
