Legendary Georgetown Men’s Basketball Coach John Thompson Jr. has announced that has partnered with The Undefeated’s Jesse Washington to release his autobiography. I Came As A Shadow will look at the highs and lows of Thompson’s life on and off the court.
“I thought I knew what John Thompson was all about. then he chose me to write his autobiography,” Washington tweeted.
This project has long been in the works. In 2019, he discussed his motivation for writing the book with The Washington Post.
“It wasn’t something all of a sudden that I said I’m going to jump up and let ’em know. I didn’t say, I’m gonna let ’em know what John Thompson is all about,” he said.

“I primarily wanted to say, ‘I’m 77 years old. There are a lot of things that have been written or said about me that I would like to give my explanation of.’ It’s not a question of I’m just trying to butcher somebody, or love them. I just want to say myself what I think I meant to do,” he continued.
Thompson was the coach of Georgetown University’s Men’s Basketball team from 1972 until 1999. During his 27 year run, he won the 1984 Division I NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and coached legends such as Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing. In his final year of coaching, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
