Another day, another remake announcement. Earlier this week an Issa-Rae-helmed Set It Off remake was announced at New Line Cinema. Also this week, Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra floated the (very very dumb) idea of a Princess Bride remake. So, it should come as no surprise that a Lebron-James-produced House Party remake is moving full steam ahead.
According to Shadow and Act, Calmatic, director of Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ music video has been tapped to direct the remake. Calmatic, whose real name is Charles Kidd II, has also directed videos for Khalid, Anderson .Paak and Dej Loaf. The film will be the director’s feature film debut.
When the project was first announced, many fans were confused as to whether it was a reboot of the original or a fully-fledged remake. James was quick to state his intentions: “This is definitely not a reboot. It’s an entirely new look for a classic movie. Everyone I grew up with loved House Party. To partner with this creative team to bring a new House Party to a new generation is unbelievable.” Atlanta writers Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori have been tapped to pen the script.
No cast information or release date have been announced so far. But, James’ producing partner Maverick Carter had this to say about the film: “We’re trying out some ideas for musicians to be cast in and to be a part of the project.” James and Carter are producing the film through their SpringHill Entertainment banner. House Party will be the company’s second feature film after Space Jam 2.
