The story of Genia added another chapter today. Following the success of “Introducing” and “Jaded,” the California native returned with a new video and single called “False Prophet.” The deeply personal, self-directed visual places her father as a pastor introducing her to the church as she is about to sing. From there, she takes control as she relives some of the toughest parts of her childhood.
“Screaming down the hall/So I try to shut it out/I try to sing away the pain,” she sings.
“Broken glass was in your hand/And you put it to her throat/How the f*ck you don’t feel no shame?/You’re supposed to be the one To show me how to love/But you showed me how to hate myself/Cause the same blood in your veins runs through mine/And that’s something I can’t get around.”
With each lyric, she peels back another layer of the violence and abuse she witnessed at the hands of her father. Still, she vows to make a change for the next generation that will come up through her family.
“That’s not how I’m gonna live/That’s not how my stories gonna end/And sometimes I wanna forget I’m down on my knees/But I’m resilient You can’t take this from me/No you won’t take this from me,” she adds.
With single and visual, Genia opens up a new door into the story of her life. As time goes by, listeners not only grow closer to her music, but they also build a bond with the person she has become.
