Six months after suffering a surprising loss at the hands of Jose Felix, lightweight contender Gary Cully is back in the green. The Ireland-born 135-pound fighter fought 29-year-old Reece Mould to a close, split-decision victory. After ten rounds, Jan Christensen and Paul McCullagh delivered the following scorecards in his favor: 96-93 and 97-93. Meanwhile, Pawel Kardyni scored the bout 97-93 in Mould’s favor.
“I’m at a loss for words,” Cully said after scoring the comeback win in his native Ireland.
“I just want to start by thanking every single person who’s out there for buying a ticket and coming out to support. I’ve said it before in interviews. Dublin, Ireland [has] the best fans in the world. That’s not bias because I’m from here. [They] really come out and support. I’m back baby and it feels good.”
With the bounce back victory, Cully improves to 16-1 and takes the WBA European Lightweight Championship. Moving forward, Cully’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, is home to a number of lightweight prospects and contenders, including Andy Cruz, Campbell Hatton and Maxi Hughes. At 27 years old, the Irish fighter moves one step closer to taking the next step up in competition.
