Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. has reportedly reached a deal to challenge Sebastian Fundora for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship in October at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. An exact date will be determined by the Dallas Cowboys‘ home schedule.
Fundora would enter the fall bout with a professional record of 21-1-1 with 13 knockouts. Despite his success as a pro, the last two fights have been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride for the champion. On April 8, 2023, Brian Mendoza knocked Fundora out in the seventh round as the two bid for the interim WBC Super Welterweight Championship. As boxing fate would have it, Fundora would bounce back after Tim Tszyu scored a TKO win against Mendoza, opening the door for another shot at the title. After Tszyu suffered a cut early in their title bout, Fundora would piece together a hard-fought decision win and claim the first title of his career. With Tszyu fighting contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. and former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford challenging for the WBA title, Fundora has elected to fight Spence Jr.
Spence Jr. will enter the ring after suffering the first loss of his pro career last summer. Looking to bounce back, the Texas native will move up in weight for the first time in his career and immediately challenge for a world title. A win would improve his record to 29-1, but a loss may push him out of the super welterweight title picture for a long time.
