On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Devin Haney beat Regis Prograis to capture the World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Lightweight Championship. After 12 rounds, all three judges delivered the following scores in favor of Haney: 120-107, 120-107 and 120-107.
“[Devin Haney] is good. He’s better than I thought he was. I just couldn’t get to him. I thought he was a soft puncher, [but] he does have power,” Prograis said after the fight.
Haney improves his professional record to 31-0 with 15 knockouts. Moving forward, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing mentioned Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez and Gervonta “Tank” Davis are all potential opponents for Haney when he returns to the ring next year. The San Francisco native also mentioned that he would entertain moving up to the welterweight division.
“Haney outboxed him and proved [that] he’s elite with a dominant performance in his first bout at 140 pounds. [It] could be his last, too. Haney told ESPN last month he planned to move up to 147 pounds next,” ESPN’s Mike Coppinger tweeted after the fight.
Meanwhile, Prograis returns to the drawing board after suffering the second loss of his professional career. After the final bell, he told Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix that he’d like to fight for one of the other super lightweight titles held by Rolando Romero, Subriel Matias or Teofimo Lopez.
