Fox network announced along with Marvel that a new X-Men television series is being developed, as reported by Variety. The project is still untitled but will be executive produced by Bryan Singer, who has headed the X-Men films for more than a decade, including this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
The series will focus on two normal parents whose children are mutants, which puts their family on the run from the government and forced to fight with other mutants trying to survive.
“Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for the network — and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe,” said David Madden, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional and complicated relationships and a rich, existing mythology from which to draw. With the brilliant production crew behind this project, it has all the makings of a big, fun and exciting new series.”
Marvel is expanding their footprint on the TV scene with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (ABC), Daredevil (Netflix), and Jessica Jones (Netflix) established and thriving. There’s also Legion, debuting on FX in 2017, which also taps into the X-Men world.
Fox is also growing their reach for comic book content. Gotham and Lucifer are both adapted from DC Comics stories. Hero shows continue to trend across the board with The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl holding it down on The CW.
We’ll see how loose and experimental Singer can be with incorporating some of the legendary X-Men into the show, and how yet another movie to TV transition is received by its fans.
