Errol Spence Jr. has his sights set on winning the WBA Welterweight Championship by defeating Manny Pacquiao on August 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada. If he is able to succeed in that endeavor, Spence Jr. has expressed that he would like to fight WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford next. However, he will not wait around for a bout with Crawford if negotiations stall yet again. He explained his thought process further during a recent interview.
“Once I get that [WBA] belt, I want that fight with Terence Crawford. But if it [doesn’t] happen, I’ll probably just move up. I’m not going to waste my time trying to fight somebody who said he [doesn’t] have any interest anymore,” Spence Jr. said
A possible showdown between Spence Jr. and Crawford is the most sought-after bout in the sport. Unfortunately, public comments, frightening car accidents and negotiation difficulties have stood in the way of making that fight happen. Instead, Spence Jr. opted to fight Danny Garcia while Terence Crawford fought Kell Brook in November. At this time, Spence Jr. has a fight scheduled while it appears Crawford may fight recently crowned 140-pound champion Josh Taylor.
“I’d like to go up to 147 and chase Terence Crawford. He’s a great fighter. Two undisputed champions going out at 147 would be awesome,” Taylor said after becoming the undisputed junior welterweight champion earlier this year.
However, Crawford has not yet commented on a potential bout against Taylor. Other potential opponents include Shawn Porter, Yordenis Ugas or Vergil Ortiz Jr.
