On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, several actors, directors and producers attended Next on Netflix and spoke to select members of the press about the streaming service’s developing projects, including the fifth season of Stranger Things.
“We spent a full year filming this season,” Stranger Things Co-Creator Ross Duffer said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty insane.”
Duffer’s breakout hit, Stranger Things, last released new episodes in 2022. Fortunately, viewers won’t have to wait much longer. Season five is expected later this year. According to Duffer’s brother and collaborator, Matt, season five will be the show’s “most personal” yet.
“At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film — for us and for our actors. We’ve been making this show together for almost 10 years. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying,” Matt Duffer said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “The show means so much to all of us, and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. And we hope — and believe — that passion will translate to the screen.”
Spinoffs within the Stranger Things universe have been teased, but Netflix did not formally announce them during their latest press event.
