R. Kelly, facing charges of sexual abuse requested an allowance to travel to Dubai. His reasoning, to earn money to pay child support however, those claims may not hold true.
The R&B singer currently faces 10 charges of sexual abuse. After a fan posted bail on those charges, the singer found himself back behind bars for unpaid child support. With the balance anonymously paid R. Kelly again became a temporarily free man.
During a dramatic interview with Gayle King, R. Kelly claims his finances took a blow following allegations of sexual perversion. The singer, unable to earn as much from his music in the United States, despite a devout fan base, hopes to take his talents to Dubai. R. Kelly claims traveling overseas to perform brings him money to support his children.
While the reasoning at surface seems applaudable, R. Kelly may have fabricated the bookings. Dubai’s government claims to have zero knowledge of any upcoming R. Kelly performances. The Associated Press reports, “authorities in Dubai have not received any request for a performance by singer R. Kelly nor are there any venues that have been booked,” adding that R. Kelly “has not been invited by the Dubai royal family for a performance.”
Despite these statements, R. Kelly’s lawyer remains adamant the singer signed contracts before the legal actions took place. Steven A. Greenberg, R. Kelly’s lawyer claims “Mr. Kelly had a signed contract with a legitimate promoter, and any information that was included in the motion to travel was from that contract. We did not say he was invited by The royal family, but the contract did provide that he would make himself available to meet with them” in a statement emailed to the Associated Press.
