Drake won the Grammy award for “Best Rap Song.” His feel good anthem God’s Plan earned the trophy however the acceptance speech sent a message.
God’s Plan reached no. 1 on Billboard charts and held record breaking streaming numbers.
The self proclaimed “6 God” used his moment on stage to send encouragement to his peers in the industry and hopeful artists watching at home. Drake reminds musicians that everyone will not always be receptive of their art.
“We play in an opinion based sport, not a factual based sport. So it’s not the NBA where at the end of the year you’re holding a trophy because you made the right decisions or won the games.”
The anti-Grammy, pro-artistry speech recognizes that although an accomplishment, winning the award does not diminish the impact of art. Drake’s speech abruptly ended with a cut to commercial.
"You've already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word. If you're a hero in your hometown." – @Drake #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/fDY70Rlq7N
