
Over the weekend, 20-year-old Latrell Allen was shot by police in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Allen was reportedly targeted by officers because they believed he matched the description of a suspect involved in a nearby robbery. From there, law enforcement claims he “pointed a gun and fired multiple rounds at uniformed Chicago police officers.” However, Allen argues that he did not fire any shots at the officers. Ultimately, officers fired multiple rounds at the young man, hitting him five times.
In response to the incident, upset and angered citizens throughout the city took the streets in protest. As events unfolded, multiple luxury storefronts in the city such as Coach and Oliver Peoples. Some media entities used these events to characterize citizens as “disgraceful.” However, others have chosen to see the humanity of those involved and try to understand where they are coming from.
This Monday, Dougie F dropped his “Luxury” video. Throughout the visual, he discusses the motivation behind looting and how it is a product of larger societal issues.
“In cases where peaceful protests haven’t created change, protesters might feel that looting and vandalism are the only ways to make their voices heard. Some see it as a chance to balance the scales, to get the things they normally can’t,” he wrote in the video’s description.
“Luxury” is just the first release in what will be a busy week for the New Jersey artist. Check out the video above.
