The future is bright in the lightweight division. Headed into the new year, Eddie Hearn is hoping that he can help put together an undisputed lightweight title fight featuring Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr. While speaking to IFL TV, Hearn suggested that a Haney-Kambosos Jr. fight could happen during the first half of the new year in either Australia or Asia.
“We can make an offer to Lou DiBella, Peter Khan and George Kambosos to stage the fight,” Hearn said.
“They can make an offer or we can be smart, work together to go out and maximise this fight. Doesn’t have to be in Australia, could be in the US or the Middle East.”
Hearn continues to work with Haney, but he is willing to concede that Kambosos Jr. is the “A side” of the fight following his win against Teofimo Lopez.
“It’s an undisputed fight so a lot of people want to pay for it, but I do like the idea of staging an event in Australia and he is the A-side. We accept that, he’s just had a fantastic win,” Hearn continued.
“Devin will go wherever he’s needed to be undisputed, we will make sure everything’s right for him and he gets the best deal. That’s the natural fight and it’s one that must happen next.”
Regardless of when or where the fight takes place, both men are entering the bout with the expectation that they will be the undisputed lightweight champion.
“I’d go to Jupiter if I got to. I think it’s a great fight. There would be no more dispute. That’s the biggest fight right now for the 135-pound division,” Haney told reporters after defeating Joseph Diaz Jr. on Saturday evening.
“I’ve been studying this guy for many years. I know exactly what I have to do if that fight is next,” Kambosos told ESPN shortly thereafter.
