After the grueling week during the Texas winter storm, native Texans seek refuge from the ongoing effects. Texans are recovering from a record-breaking blizzard, which left thousands without electricity and water due to the freezing temperatures. Tragically, the storm coldly took lives.
Thankfully, the Dallas Mavericks, along with El Paso, Texas native Beto O’Rourke and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, put forth a valiant effort in helping the unfortunate.
The Dallas Mavericks unsurprisingly rose to the occasion. Last summer, Mark Cuban, Dwight Powell, Jalen Brunson, and Maxi Kleber took to Dallas’s streets to join peaceful protesters in light of George Floyd’s death.

With the city of Dallas in desperate need of relief, both players and Mavericks executives donated $1.25 million to the Mayor’s Natural Disaster Fund. The fund was created in light of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Mark Cuban and Mavericks’ CEO Cynt Marshall represent the executives who donated. The usual humanitarians Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber, along with Luka Doncic and Tim Hardaway Jr, constitute the players who kindly contributed.
Whenever Dallas is hurting, we can count on the @dallasmavs to step up and help out. Today, I am proud and grateful to announce that the organization has donated $1.1 million to the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund to help those in need. https://t.co/8YOhuG1OPF

National Help
While northeastern US residents deal with frequent winter storms, Texans, unfortunately, must deal with the infamous power grid controlled by the juggernaut Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
In light of the 3 million Texas residents without power, the proud state needed national relief.
As alluded to earlier, Texas received additional aid. O’Rourke and Ocasio-Cortez provided relief to Texans suffering from the cruel winter storm. In both, the form of financial contributions to major groundwork, the two politicians combined to represent the good in American government.
Ocasio-Cortez and O’Rourke accumulated $5 million in donations via Act Blue. The former congressman took to the streets as he did when campaigning for Texas Senate. According to O’Rourke, an estimate of 900,000 wellness checks occurred in addition to delivered foods to the elderly and others in need.
Despite some Texas politicians failing to provide substantial support, O’Rourke and Ocasio-Cortez formed a formidable team and also opened eyes as to who deserves votes for future elections.
The Dallas Mavericks aren’t finished
Following a 102-92 win over Memphis, Hardaway Jr was available for questions in a Mavericks’ postgame Zoom call. During the call, I asked him about the contributions made, and if he’d like to share other groundwork involved. This was his response:
The Mavericks continue to speak out against social issues, in addition to providing humanitarian work. While the sun shines over frozen pipes and waterless homes, we Texans recover. The state of Texas is grateful for the assistance in light of such an unprecedented storm.
