Common and Erykah Badu gave high school students the surprise of a lifetime this week when they stopped by for a surprise visit. Wednesday morning, the talented duo toured the halls and spoke to students. The trip was especially important for Badu as the two were touring her former high school, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
When speaking to the students, Common said, “This journey that you’re on, you’re going to be faced with all types of challenges. People [may] doubt you.”
He added, “Some of your own friends might tell you, ‘I don’t know if that’s for you.’ Again, I remind you that this is your passion, this is your love, this is your purpose and your purpose will continue to evolve and grow.”
Common also spoke to the students about giving back through their art and beyond. He said, “Service is the rent due for living on earth. All my Booker T Washington students, your rent is due. Let’s serve the people.”
Common’s stop in Dallas is just his most recent public appearance. This year, the Chicago artist has dropped an album and a book. Not to mention, he’ll be on tour later this year. Meanwhile, Badu will be heading out of Dallas to perform in Detroit during Labor Day Weekend.
