Playing in the background of the “This is America” pep band is the other song that Childish Gambino debuted on Saturday. During his time doubling as the Saturday Night Live host and musical guest, Childish Gambino debuted a new record on the NBC hallmark show called “Saturday”. The record rides on the same vibe as many of the songs on Awaken! My Love and takes on a more playful tone than “This is America”.
Accompanied by a love band, Gambino broke out into some live locals. Gambino sang, “God, this 9 to 5 just keep on killing me/I wanna leave this place like all the time/Talking to my boss, he just can’t feel the dream/That’s the chance to let me blow your mind.” Later on, Gambino broke out into the bouncy hook singing, “Saturday, all I wanna do is make you dance, girl/And all of mine/Saturday, all I wanna do is make you dance, girl/And all of mine.”

Aesthetically, Gambino’s set gave off the vibe that he was searching for Black Renaissance look similar to that of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920’s. His “This is America” visual work also had a similar feel. While it appears that neither of “This is America” or “Saturday” will appear on Gambino’s next project, it will be interesting to see if Gambino continues this wave of Black Renaissance themed visuals and musical performance. For now, you can check out his latest live performance before he hits the road with Rae Sremmurd this fall.
