Stewart, the beautiful, perfect corgi who played Captain Raymond Holt’s dog, Cheddar, in Brooklyn Nine-Nine has passed away. His owner made the announcement on Stewart’s Instagram.
“We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company,” his owner wrote in the post. “Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah.” Stewart was 13.
Cheddar started as a simple one-off joke early on in the show. However, the brilliant dog instantly became a hit with fans and started playing a pivotal role in more than a few episodes. He was integral to one of Jake’s Halloween Heists and even played ring bearer in Jake and Amy’s wedding. (The picture of Cheddar above comes after he gets a little too frisky with the wedding cake.)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has already been renewed for a seventh season. It’s unclear whether Cheddar will be recast or if his passing will be written into the show. In my opinion, it’d be a disservice to everything Cheddar stood for if we don’t get at least a full hour-long tribute episode.
