While it was reported that Devin Askew would be coming back for a sophomore season, that isn’t the case with every Kentucky freshman. As Cam’Ron Fletcher enters the transfer portal, it is a reminder that things are always changing in Lexington. This isn’t the biggest news for those who kept a close eye on the Wildcats this season. Fletcher, a four-star prospect out of high school, came to UK with bigger aspirations than what the season turned out to be. He had this to say in a statement regarding the news.
“Although this season did not go the way any of us wanted to, being a part of the Kentucky men’s basketball program has been a great experience.”
The rising sophomore forward thanked his coaches and teammates as well as the Big Blue Nation in his statement. He will explore other options.
Like the other newcomers to Kentucky for the 2020-21 season, Fletcher surely expected things to go better. However, early frustrations led to Cam’Ron having to take a leave of absence from the team. Over the course of eight games, the Saint Louis native averaged 1.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and shot 53.8% from the field. At 6’6″ 215lbs, he has the build to be a bully inside.
John Calipari wished his player well.
“[Cam] mature as a person this season and I know he will have great success in whatever path he chooses. I support his decision and I will do anything to help him with his career.”
Fletcher will surely have many callers for his services. As a high school player, he averaged over 20 points and almost 10 rebounds a game to go along with almost 3.0 blocks a game. He led his Vashon High School team to a Missouri State Class 4 semifinal appearance. The season was canceled due to COVID-19 issues. Fletcher was a two-time state champion in high school.
