Quarterback Cam Newton has officially apologized for a sexist comment that he made during a press conference earlier this week.
On Wednesday Newton was asked a question by Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer about wide receiver routes. Newton replied, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes…”
In a video posted to his twitter page the quarterback addressed those comments.

To the young people who see this, I hope that you learn something from this as well. Don’t be like me; be better than me.
Cam certainly seems sincere in the video and the apology is well thought out. Newton notes that he is the father of two daughters and goes on to say that he tries to encourage them to, “do and be anything that they want to be.”
Early in the video Newton acknowledges that his comment was, “extremely degrading and disrespectful,” and that it was not his intention. Although, he never does state exactly what he meant by the comment, he does imply that he was simply making a (bad) joke.
Prior to the videos release Newton was dropped by sponsor Dannon Oikos Yogurt. Most likely due to the severe backlash Newton received through social media.

“I’ve already lost sponsors and countless fans, I realized that the joke is really on me.”
It will be interesting to see if the comments made by Cam cause a distraction for the team, although Linebacker Thomas Davis does not seem concerned, “So we’re really focused in on Detroit. We can’t allow anything for us to be a distraction.”
