The biggest fights of the new year may not involve titles. Ryan Garcia is expected to take on Gervonta “Tank” Davis in Las Vegas in April. Deontay Wilder has expressed interest in fighting Anthony Joshua before the end of the year. Not to mention, Jaron “Boots” Ennis hopes to take on Vergil Ortiz if he does not get a shot at the title this summer. With all of that going on, it appears that Caleb Plant and David Benavidez will go to war in March.
“Just got word. See y’all early March,” Plant tweeted.
Both Benavidez and Plant are looking to get a shot at Saul Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight title, but they will have to go through each other to get it done. Plant enters the bout with a record of 22-1, including victories against José Uzcátegui and Anthony Dirrell. His lone loss came at the hands of Alvarez back in 2021. Meanwhile, his opponent, David Benavidez, enters the bout with an unblemished record of 26-0 with 23 knockouts.
“I know it’s not gonna be easy,” Benavidez told Fight Hype.
“Caleb is a good fighter, he’s a good defensive fighter but I feel like overall I’m stronger, faster, I think better, and have more punching power.”
More details regarding the bout will be shared as the date nears. In the meantime, Showtime Sports will shift its attention toward Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Hector Garcia as they share the ring in Washington, D.C. on January 7, 2023.
