This week didn’t see much of a shake-up at the box office, but there is a new number one. Dumbo, Disney’s latest live-action adaptation, soared into theaters this weekend and took the top spot with $45 million domestically. Tim Burton’s take on the flying elephant has received mixed reviews but fans of the original should be pleased with the adaptation.
Jordan Peele’s Us landed in second this week, despite some controversy. The Lupita-Nyong’o-led film charged ahead, picking up another $33 million in its second weekend. That is good enough to push the film’s domestic total over $125 million, more than eclipsing its $20 million budget.
In third this week, Captain Marvel continued to push towards the billion dollar mark. Domestically, it earned $20.5 million, pushing its total up to $353.8 million stateside. Worldwide it currently sits at $990 million total, meaning that, barring a horrible drop-off in the next week, it will likely become the 7th Marvel film to reach the $1 billion in box office revenue.
Rounding out the top five this week are Five Feet Apart and Unplanned. In fourth, Five Feet Apart added another $6.2 million, pushing its total domestic haul just over $35 million. The YA adaptation has done surprisingly well after a slow start, delivering on the film’s reported $7 million budget. Unplanned, the latest film from PureFlix, brought in $6 million in its first weekend.
