‘Lee Daniels: The Butler’ serves up a second week of success at the box office despite three newcomers landing in theaters this weekend. The film comes out on top by earning an estimated $17 million bringing its 10-day total to $52 million. Many analysts are citing the films success due to Oprah Winfrey’s star power and the lack of competition at the box office.
‘We’re the Millers’ is still hanging on strong in second place by bringing in a reported $14 million. So far the movie has brought in $92 million total and is set to bring Jennifer Aniston her sixth $100 million grossing movie next week.
The bronze medal goes to ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ which brought in an estimated $9.3 million and a 5-day total to $14.1 million. Screen Gems hopes to franchise the adapted book series by already beginning production on a second film.
The other two new releases fell flat this weekend as well. ‘The World’s End’ starring Simon Pegg opened with $8.9 million and the horror flick ‘You’re Next’ brought in $7.1 million.
The upcoming Labor Day weekend could help save some of these movies as only two new releases hit theaters. Next week Ethan Hawke’s action film ‘Getaway’ will have to deal with a British Invasion as ‘One Direction: This Is Us’ takes over theaters.
