The box office saw a major shake-up in the top five this week as newcomers dominated in the first weekend of November. Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody took the top spot with $50 million in its debut. The Rami Malek-led film has received mixed reviews overall with near-universal praise for Malek’s performance as the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
Disney’s holiday release, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, came in second place over the weekend with $20 million. While an underwhelming debut, the extended run made by the Goosebumps sequel during the Halloween season may be an indicator of the strategy Disney and Buena Vista are taking here.
Coming in third this week is Tyler Perry’s Nobody’s Fool with a respectable $14 million. The Tiffany Haddish-led movie has nearly made back it’s $19 million budget but is significantly lower than the debut of Night School, Haddish’s last leading effort.
A Star is Born continues to impress as it barely beat out Halloween this weekend, pulling in $11.1 million for a total haul of $165.6 million. However, Halloween came in a close fifth with $11 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $150.4 million.
