Netflix has experienced major success with a few of its original films lately. Most notably, Roma was nominated for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards and High Flying Bird marked Steven Soderbergh’s introduction to Netflix. Going forward, Netflix has big plans for high profile releases such as The King and The Irishman. However, no original film this year will likely reach the level of popularity that Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box did.
The Sandra Bullock film was undoubtedly one of the bigger surprises of last year. While the film wasn’t critically acclaimed, it did spark the social media friendly, Bird Box Challenge. The movie also managed to garner forty-five million views within a few weeks of its release. While most are familiar with the film, most are not aware that the movie was based off of a novel of the same name.
To kick start the week, Bird Box author, Josh Malerman, has announced that he will be writing a follow up to his 2014 novel. During an interview with Esquire, Malerman said, “In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl.” He added, “The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better.”
Malerman’s latest work is titled Malorie and it will be released on October 1st.
