Fox announced earlier this week that the Batman prequel series ‘Gotham’ will be coming to its end with the 5th and final season. The end of season 5 will supposedly have Bruce Wayne finally donning the cape and cowl as the Dark Knight and have an actually ‘end’ to the show after fear that Fox would cancel the show entirely. Now if you still can’t get enough of Batman and his arsenal of characters then fear not! Epix TV has picked up a prequel series ‘Pennyworth’.
True fans of Batman will instantly recognize what the show will be about, but for the casual fans here is an explanation. ‘Pennyworth’ which will be helmed by Gotham show runner Bruno Heller will revolve around Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth and his life before joining the Wayne family. According to Adam Chitwood of Collider News this is what the 10-episodes that were ordered will be about:
Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred Pennyworth on Gotham, is not involved in Pennyworth and casting has not yet begun, but the show will take place in 1960s London and will explore the origins of the former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with billionaire Thomas Wayne.
So this confirms that this won’t be a DIRECT spinoff of Gotham but it will be interesting how the Gotham showrunner will bring a new take on the infamous best friend of Bruce Wayne. This is a big move for Epix TV, by ordering 10-episodes right after the news that Gotham was almost cancelled. Will there be cameos from different characters? Will this be a very different portrayal of Alfred then that of which we’ve seen in the movies and TV shows? No one knows but all we know is that if you’re not tired of Batman prequels, here is another one.
