Seventeen years have passed since Andre 3000 and Big Boi delivered the sixth and final Outkast album, Idlewild. Since then, the Atlanta native has returned periodically to work alongside the likes of Drake, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean and Beyoncé. However, he has repeatedly veered away from the possibility of releasing a solo project of his own…until today.
Andre 3000 has shared his first official solo LP, New Blue Sun. As described by the legendary musician, the project is “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds.” The 87-minute project is devoid of features, but instead allows the iconic wordsmith the opportunity to paint a picture with wood instruments.
“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” he said.
“I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”
The project not only features Andre 3000’s flute-playing prowess, but it also includes some of his most creative and blunt song titles. “Ninety Three Til Infinity and Beyoncé” and “Ants To You, Gods To Who?” are among the more tame song titles included in the project’s track list. New Blue Sun also introduces some of the Atlanta native’s collaborators to a new audience. Carlos Niño handles percussion, Nate Mercereau plays the guitar, Surya Botofasina is on the keyboard and Deantoni Parks plays the drums.
