When Acacia Markel spoke to Shoutout Atlanta in 2022, she mentioned she was “always quiet growing up.” However, she’s found her voice in art, particularly music, as exemplified in her latest release — “It’s Whatever.”
“I don’t believe a f—k thing that comes out of a n—s mouth,” Markel nonchalantly raps as she settles into the track.
Switching between singing and rapping, the Georgia native effortlessly navigates the soothing yet soulful production while airing out her grievances about her exes, dating, and the world in general. Just when you think that Acacia Markel’s venting session will turn from a doleful, laid-back track, she just shrugs her shoulders and says, “It’s whatever, though.”
“You were supposed to be my forever. It’s whatever, though,” Markel continues.
In its truest form, “It’s Whatever” feels like a late-night conversation with a friend who is letting out all their frustrations about dating, friendship, and life. Sitting there and listening, you nod because you relate to what they’re saying. Nothing drives this feeling home more than the “It’s Whatever” video. The three-minute visual finds Acacia Markel sitting on her couch, sipping wine and speaking directly into the camera as if the viewer is just another participant in the conversation.
Some may try to compare her sound and style to the likes of the talented Doechii, Samara Cyn, or Doja Cat. While being compared to those artists is a compliment, not an insult, Acacia Markel is her own entity, a self-taught poet and songwriter with a knack for honesty and a disdain for the inauthentic.
