The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC have announced that the 94th Academy Awards will no longer be broadcast on February 27, 2022. Instead, the televised ceremony will take place on March 27, 2022. Aside from this year’s ceremony, this will be the latest that an Academy Awards ceremony has taken place this century
While the Academy Awards are being pushed back to a later, it is not necessarily out of the ordinary for the event to take place in March. From 1943 to 2004, the Academy Awards took place in either March or April. In 2004, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences moved to have the ceremony in February.
Moving the Academy Awards ceremony back one month will also have an impact on eligibility requirements. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eligibility requirements regarding theatrical releases and streaming releases will remain the same. Adding on, films released anywhere between March 1 and December 31 will be eligible for the 94th Academy Awards.
Finally, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the awards ceremony will move back to its typical location, Dolby Theater. While some portions of the awards ceremony took place there this year, the majority of the ceremony took place in Union Station. There is no word as to if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will look to have a singular host this year.
