Young Thug and Gunna have put their resources together in order to create real change in the greater Atlanta area. During a recent interview with WSB-TV, the two chart-topping artists revealed that they had posted bail for 30 people who were held in jail for low-level offenses.
“This is where we are from,” Jeffrey “Young Thug” Williams told Michael Seiden of WSB-TV.
“We just woke up and went to the jail with the lawyer and, you know, DA’s and the prosecutors, you know, the bonding companies and just got as many people as we can out.”
The efforts put forth by Young Thug and Gunna highlight a larger issue in American society, cash bail. Three out of every five people in U.S. jails have not been convicted of a crime. However, nearly 500,000 people remain incarcerated because they are not financially able to pay their way out of jail. In a country where the majority of the wealth resides within white communities, a large number of people of color remain in jail simply for being less well off while others go free. This system can put a strain on people’s families, personal finances and their own mental health.
“You never know what somebody been through. There was people sitting out three or four years and couldn’t get out on a bond,” Sergio “Gunna” Kitchens explained.
“It feels so good to the point where you start feeling that’s why God put me here. He put me here to do this,” Young Thug added.
Young Thug and Gunna bailed out 30 inmates from Fulton County jail this past weekend.
Most inmates were booked on minor offenses but couldn't get out because of bail money. ??
