Woody Allen wants his money. The New York director is reportedly suing Amazon and Amazon Prime for a whopping $68 million over an unreleased film. The streaming service scrapped his project ‘A Rainy Day In New York’ amidst sexual assault allegations against the director/writer in 2016.
Per Screen Rant:
Though Amazon may have been mum about their reasons for shelving Allen’s film, it was certainly no coincidence that the decision came after new attention was shone on allegations of sexual abuse against the director, prompted by a 2017 essay by Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow. Amid the new backlash against Allen, many stars of the director’s movies came out expressing their regret over working with him, though a handful of Allen loyalists have defended him. Rainy Day In New York star Timothée Chalamet took things one step further than most by donating his salary from the film to the Time’s Up organization.
Now, Amazon has yet to give a reason regarding shelving the project but it’s pretty clear that it happened around the same time the allegations had been revealed. Dylan Farrow is the person who is accusing Allen and reportedly it happened back in 1992, when as a 7-year-old she claimed he molested her in the home of her adoptive mother and his then-wife Mia Farrow. The allegations came after Farrow learned Allen had been having an affair with her adoptive daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, who at the time was in college, and Allen claimed Dylan Farrow’s allegation against him was set up by Mia as an act of revenge.
It’s all very scary and gripping stuff. If the allegations against Allen are true, then Amazon has every right to separate themselves from both the project and the director. Regardless, the whole Allen situation is something that we’ve seen become more prominent throughout the past couple of years in Hollywood and it’s something that must be addressed.
