The NCAA bribery scandal that rocked college basketball is making its way into the NBA. Andy Miller, one of the league’s most reputable agents, and proprietor of ASM Sports group has had to deal with the fallout. ASM employed Christian Dawkins, who the FBI arrested for his involvement in the scandal. Dawkins represented Los Angeles Clippers Center, Willie Reed.
As reported earlier on DefPen.com, the FBI probed into Miller’s business as a possible connection with the case. Miller reportedly had has computer confiscated in the raid.
ESPN reports that Reed, along with numerous other NBA players, has moved on from ASM Sports. Reed, however, took it a step further. According to Jon Goodman of ESPN, Reed has filed a $13.5 million arbitration claim against his former management group.
Dawkins was fired by ASM back in May for an unrelated incident.
The 27-year-old alleges Dawkins swindled him out of a sizeable sum of money. Following from ESPN.com:
Dawkins, sources say, advised Reed to turn down a preliminary three-year, $15 million deal by the Miami Heat early in the free-agency juncture with the promise of a larger market opening up for his services.
That never occurred.
Reed terminated his contract with Miller on the evening of July 11, sources say. Sources say Dawkins represented Reed and others well after he was believed to have been fired from the company over two months ago for racking up $42,000 in Uber charges on an unnamed NBA player’s credit card.
ASM represents multiple high-profile players including New York Knick Kristaps Porzingis and Indiana Pacer Miles Turner. Miller has also orchestrated many other lucrative deals for NBA players including Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka. Reed signed with the Clippers this offseason for a one-year 1.5 million contract.
A total of ten individuals, along with Dawkins have been arrested and charged with allegedly funneling money to the families of players in an attempt to coax players to sign with NCAA teams. The University of Lousiville and Jim Gatto of Adidas has been pegged as participants in the scandal.
