UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that KiKi Layne will play the daughter of Prince Akeem played by Eddie Murphy. Layne’s character is “burdened with feeling like she is the son her father never had.” Layne is best known for her role in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk.
Zamunda may soon have a vampire hunter and rapper on call. Ok, so probably not, but Wesley Snipes and Rick Ross are both set to appear alongside Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in Coming to America 2. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snipes will portray General Izzi, the ruler of a neighboring nation. It’s unclear who Ross will play but he recently claimed the film would be shooting at his Atlanta mansion so, maybe he’s playing himself?
Alongside Murphy and Hall, James Earl Jones, and Paul Bates will also be reprising their roles from the original. Jones played Murphy’s on-screen father, the King of Zamunda while Bates portrayed his servant/bodyguard. black-ish creator Kenya Barris is writing the script for the film with Craig Brewer set to direct. The film is expected to begin production this fall.
Coming to America 2 will follow Murphy’s Prince Akeem as he returns to America in search of his long lost son. Poised to become the next King of Zamunda, Akeem seeks to honor his father’s dying wish to find his son and groom him to one day succeed Akeem as king.
Coming to America 2 will hit theaters on August 7th, 2020.
