Athletes’ roles in speaking out about social changes have been a huge storyline this offseason. From NBA players using their platform to call for change to an NFL quarterback kneeling during the anthem to protest social injustice, athletes have become more socially conscious.
The NBA season is drawing near and with that comes the possibility of similar protests. The NBA and NBPA have already announced that they are working for a solution that will allow players to speak out on their beliefs and protest in a respectful manner.
The Golden State Warriors are also taking their own approach to the news. General manager Bob Myers mentioned that the team will host a panel including civic leaders that will speak to Warriors players about social issues.

Sounds like the Warriors are planning a panel discussion about social issues for their players. May skip a practice during camp. Bob Myers: pic.twitter.com/leCVFu7Hoz

This news comes on the heels of head coach Steve Kerr voicing his support for athletes (Colin Kaepernick in particular) using their platforms to create positive discussions and changes:

GSW players including Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry have all previously mentioned their support for Kaepernick.
Hopefully more teams take the Warriors (light years ahead) initiative. The sports world has become a catalyst for making changes to social issues. The Warriors will be the most covered team in the league next year so their handling of the issue will speak volumes.
