Nearly four decades after the United States Football League put together its final game, the league is planning a comeback. On Thursday, the USFL announced that it would attempt to return to the field by spring 2022.
“I’m extremely passionate about football and the opportunity to work with FOX Sports and to bring back the USFL in 2022 was an endeavor worth pursuing,” Brian Woods of the USFL stated.
The USFL is the latest league to try its hand at providing fans with professional football during the spring. Other leagues like the American Alliance of Football and the XFL have tried to achieve the same goal, but have failed due to a variety of obstacles.
“We look forward to providing players a new opportunity to compete in a professional football league and giving fans everywhere the best football viewing product possible during what is typically a period devoid of professional football,” Woods added.
In its return, the league hopes to field eight teams by 2022. Each team is expected to be named after a franchise from the original league. Details regarding franchise owners, team locations and coaches “will be announced at a later date.”
