The Dallas Cowboys have informed running back Tony Pollard that they will be placing the franchise tag on him this offseason. There was some speculation that the team would make this move to add more time to sign him to a long-term deal. The two sides have until July to work out a long-term deal and if they don’t Pollard will make $10.1 million next season under the franchise tag. While Pollard was injured in the 2022-23 NFL Playoffs, he is on track to be ready for training camp later in the offseason.
This past season with the Dallas Cowboys, Tony Pollard rushed the ball 193 times for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 39 passes for 371 yards and three receiving touchdowns. This season Pollard emerged as the top running back option for the team after a promising start to his career in the seasons before. While the leg injury is some concern, his recovery is progressing nicely for the team. Dallas will likely move quickly to get a long-term deal worked out with Pollard and make other adjustments on the roster.
With Tony Pollard back on the roster, the team will need to address running back Ezekiel Elliott and his massive contract. While there have been rumors that the running back is willing to take a pay cut if he does not the team could decide to release him to free agency this offseason. This season Pollard began taking even more snaps on the team and that is not likely to change next season. Dallas feels as if they are a few key moves away from contending for a Super Bowl and will attempt to make those moves this offseason.
