Last October, It was announced that Tom Hardy was on board to portray Al Capone. The film ‘Fonzo’ is set to helmed by troubled director Josh Trank. Whose most recent effort was the heavily berated ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot. Though it should also be noted that before the failure of the ‘Fantastic Four’ Trank was lauded as one of Hollywood’s up and coming talents after the release of his debut feature ‘Chronicle’. A collaboration with Hardy plus this subject matter could be what Trank needs to get his career back on track.
The film is set to focus on the later years of Al Capone’s life in which he is incarcerated and suffering from dementia. This part of Capone’s life remains largely untold on the big screen. As most films that focus on Capone’s life revolve around on the juicier elements from Capone’s youth and young adulthood. Capone’s dementia riddled elder years could provide Hardy with a role he could really sink his teeth into. Dementia is a tough enough subject to nail down properly on its own but when you add in the prison element it becomes a truly daunting task that only one of the best would dare take on. ‘Fonzo’ is set to begin production this summer with it eye’s on a 2018 release date. The synopsis for the film is listed below courtesy of Slash Film.
“Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”
