Tim Tszyu was initially scheduled to challenge Jermell Charlo for the undisputed super middleweight title in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this year. However, Charlo suffered a hand injury while training for the bout and the fight has been postponed indefinitely. As a result, Tszyu made the decision to take a fight in the interim. While many thought he may fight a more inexperienced opponent, the unbeaten contender made the decision to fight former WBC Super Middleweight Champion Tony Harrison.
On Saturday, Tony Harrison made his debut in Australia against the hometown hero, Tim Tszyu. Early on, Harrison’s length and jab kept Tszyu honest, but the Australian fighter quickly began to make adjustments and work the fight in his favor. While Harrison was able to land 23 more jabs than Tszyu, the younger, quicker fighter was able to land 76 more power punches and 53 more total punches. Ultimately, the unbeaten contender was able to drop Harrison in the ninth round before the referee stopped it moments later.
By defeating Harrison, Tszyu claims the interim WBO Super Welterweight Championship and earns a shot at Charlo.
“The message was sent clearly. You know what’s up. You know what’s next. I’m coming. I’m coming to America. Australia already knew, now the world. What’s my motherf*ckin’ name? Say my motherf*ckin’ name,” Tszyu said after the fight.
Undisputed super middleweight titleholder Jermell Charlo assisted Showtime with their broadcast of the fight. At the conclusion of the bout, the Texas native called Tszyu’s performance “impressive,” but said that he would have a much tougher time when the two fight later this year.
“He was impressive, he did what he had to do at home,” Charlo said.
“But my movement, my style, my power will make him have to do different things.”
