Social media users received a somewhat unexpected surprise Wednesday afternoon. Despite numerous reports from reputable outlets, Meta unveiled its “text-based conversation” app, Threads, on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Expediting the app’s launch did not stifle excitement for the app as it has brought in 30 million users in 24 hours. Celebrities like Usher, Shaquille O’Neal, Stephen Curry and Alex Rodriguez have already taking to the app.
“I’m leaving [T]twitter for threads,” Meek Mill wrote.
“Can’t get enough of your threads,” Jennifer Lopez commented.
Threads is the latest app to join the social media stratosphere. Just last week, Twitter made the decision to limit the number of tweets a user can view each day. Many users responded to this change by looking for alternative social media sites. Apps like Spoutible, Spill, Bluesky and Mastodon have all experienced upticks in user activity within the last week. With the backing of Meta, the app is expected to serve as Twitter’s competition for the foreseeable future.
“Instagram is where billions of people around the world connect over photos and videos,” a statement from Meta reads.
“Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas. Just like on Instagram, with Threads you can follow and connect with friends and creators who share your interests – including the people you follow on Instagram and beyond. And you can use our existing suite of safety and user controls.”
