The Super Mario Bros. Movie will make its Peacock debut on August 3, 2023. The streaming edition of the box office smash will feature behind-the-scenes cast interviews, a lyric video for a Princess Peach song and an immersive “Field Guide” with bonus features.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen. The film tells the story of “a plumber named Mario who travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, trying to save a captured princess.”
Thus far, The Super Mario Bros. is the highest-grossing film of 2023. Through Independence Day Weekend, the film brought in more than $500 million across the United States and Canada. Worldwide, the film has generated more than $1.3 billion at the box office. Furthermore, the film earned generally favorable reviews, including a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“This lively computer-animated take on the video game just opened and it’s already the biggest box-office smash of 2023. Despite lapses into dull and disposable, it’s also a godsend for parents seeking family entertainment for the 5-year-old in all of us,” Peter Travers of ABC News said.
“While The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s ambitions don’t stretch far beyond telling a competent story featuring these beloved characters… it at least succeeds at that,” Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence commented.
