On Saturday, July 29, Terence Crawford made history. The Omaha, Nebraska knocked Errol Spence Jr. down three times en route to a ninth-round TKO win. Mike Tyson, Andre Ward and several other boxing luminaries openly applauded the champion’s performance, including Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
“Congrats [Terence Crawford]! You are a f*cking great fighter. [This is] well deserved,” Alvarez tweeted.
As fans, fighters and critics continued to applaud Crawford’s performance, some began to think about what lies ahead for the Omaha native. Many hope Crawford will have the opportunity to fight super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo. Others began wondering if Crawford could beat a prime Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a dream matchup. Not to mention, those around Jaron Ennis began calling for a shot at the champion. Amidst all of the chatter, some also wondered what a fight with Crawford and Alvarez would look like. However, it didn’t take long for the welterweight champion to shoot down the idea of him jumping up three weight classes to fight Alvarez.
“I would say 154 [is my highest weight class], realistically,” Crawford told Peter Rosenberg and Ebro of Hot 97.
“[Those] boys get big up there and I’m not a person that toot my own horn too loud to be able to say, ‘Oh I could beat the world.’ I understand there are weight classes for a reason and I respect the weight classes.”
Despite Crawford’s comments, there is one fighter who still believes the welterweight champion could beat Alvarez.
“Honestly, I think Bud can beat Canelo,” Stevenson told iFL TV.
“I would like to see it, just because I know, like — I don’t think size wins fights, I think skills do.”
