Initially, Teofimo Lopez Jr. was set to defend his lightweight titles on June 5 in Miami, Florida. However, it appears that his championship defense will be scheduled for June 19. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated first reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
“Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos will not fight on June 5th, sources told Sports Illustrated. Keith Idec [was the] first to report the date was in doubt. Event organizers are targeting June 19th as a rescheduled date, in Miami,” the boxing insider wrote.
Promoters would not confirm that the date why the bout was moved away from the first weekend in June. However, many suspect that it is due to the recently confirmed boxing exhibition between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Logan Paul. The highly anticipated event is set for June 6 in Miami, Florida at Hard Rock Stadium. Badou Jack, Jarrett Hurd, Luis Arias, Jean Pascal and Chad Johnson are set to fight on the undercard.
Lopez and Kambosos are not out of the woods yet. Their championship bout will face stiff competition on June 19 as well. ESPN, Showtime and DZAN all have highly-anticipated bouts set for that date as well. Not to mention, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. will return to the ring against Hector Camacho on pay-per-view.
