WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis has confirmed that he has cut ties with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Leonard Ellerbee and Mayweather Promotions.
“This [is] just a test run right now. [It’s] just [an] ‘on my own’ type of joint. But much love to Mayweather Promotions, Leonard, Floyd…all [of] them guys. I definitely appreciate them, but I’m just doing my own thing now,” Davis said, per Bad Left Hook.
“I’m not saying in the future we can’t work together or anything like that.”
Despite reports that his relationship with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is strained, Davis maintains that he holds no hard feelings toward the hall-of-fame boxer.
“Floyd out doing him, he always been like that. I gotta focus. He already did what he had to do. I ain’t gonna lie, me, if I had did what he did in the sport, I’d be the same way,” Davis explained, per Bad Left Hook.
“So I don’t fault him for staying to himself and things like that, but it’s also a part of me to like come back and help too. It’s much love to the whole Mayweather Promotions, ain’t no bad blood type of sh*t.”
As he enters this next phase of his career, Davis will return home. An hour away from his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, Davis will put his title on the line against WBA Super Featherweight Champion Hector Garcia on January 7, 2023 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
