Steve Lacy has released his latest solo effort, Apollo XXI. After years of working with The Internet, Solange and many more, the California native is here to shine on his own. In an interview with Vice, Lacy described the project as “fun and witty.”
Among other things, Lacy also wanted to assure fans that his album would be unique and different from any of his other work. Lacy said, “I like to be a chameleon, blend into any situation I’m given, whether it’s musically, or with life. It’s cool, I just like to read them, and their personalities before, and like present an idea.”
Lacy also noted that he’s in a new creative space thanks to his bit of commercial success. Lacy mentioned, “I’m not as limited to resources anymore. I’ve made a little money, so I have a laptop now and some instruments. I think the process is still the same, I’ve just got some better gear that’s all.”
After a short build up to his debut solo album, he’s here to deliver music. Inspired by Prince, Apollo XXI has a soulful vibe that includes singles like “Playground” and “Outro Freestyle.” Check out the full project above and let us know what you think.
