Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr hasn’t minced his words when it comes to voicing his thoughts on current affairs. He has been especially critical of the current President and his tactics. Kerr’s outspokenness is what allows his team not to be hesitant when speaking about issues that matter. (Some Warriors are more verbose than others).
Kerr was a guest on “Pod Save America,” a podcast hosted by Dan Pfeiffer. On the episode, the accomplished head coach and Pfeiffer tackled some different topics. Once the discussion veered toward the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick, Kerr had an interesting take on the situation.
“Oh, he is being blackballed. That’s a no-brainer,” Kerr explained on the podcast. “All you have to do is read the transactions every day when you see the quarterbacks who are getting hired. He’s way better than any of them.”
Kerr went on to articulate his opinion on why the SuperBowl quarterback doesn’t have a job in the NFL.
The following transcription from Cindy Boren of the Washington Post,
“The NFL has a different fan base than the NBA does. The NBA is more urban, [the] NFL is more conservative, and I think a lot of the NFL fans are truly angry at Kaepernick, and I think owners are worried what it’s going to do to business. I think there is a legitimate concern, too, about the distraction that it’s going to create,” he said. “I’m not justifying teams not signing him but I will acknowledge — when you think about Tim Tebow, for example. Tebow was like this lightning rod. Whether you liked him or didn’t like him, if he went to a team, that was going to be the story every single day. That’s now Kaepernick.
The NBA operates in a different space than the NFL in many aspects. The most glaring distinction is how coaches and players across the league are comfortable taking on the issues. Grizzlies head coach Dave Fizdale and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich have led the charge as coaches. The NBA isn’t without its flaws, but the comfort that the NBA provides which grants players and coaches an avenue to speak freely can go a long way in affecting change in our country.
