Free agency deals in the NFL don’t normally include big names this late in the signing period. Former Carolina Panthers cornerback Stephon Gilmore has signed a two-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts. The deal is worth up to $23 million and includes $14 million in guaranteed money. Gilmore was the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year but had a few injury problems with the New England Patriots and was traded last year to the Carolina Panthers. He is also a five-time Pro Bowler.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for a run at the playoffs with their already established defense and young but elite running back Jonathan Taylor. Trading for quarterback Matt Ryan and signing Gilmore showcases a desire to win now with their current talent. Last year with the Carolina Panthers, Stephon Gilmore recorded 16 tackles, a tackle for a loss, and two interceptions for 13 yards. He only played eight games with three starts.
Colts defense will now include DeForest Buckner, Darius Leonard, Kenny Moore + Stephon Gilmore, with two talented young pass rushers — Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo — entering their second season.

The Colts have had competitive teams over the past few seasons, but quarterback play has largely set them back. Jonathan Taylor is in his prime now and hopefully being paired with Matt Ryan will solve the problems. Stephon Gilmore will be an experienced voice on the defense as the Colts prepare to try and compete for a Super Bowl next year.
