Special counsel Jack Smith has subpoenaed former White House senior advisors Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. The subpoena is reportedly connected to the events of January 6, 2021 and accusations that former President Donald Trump and his allies attempted to overturn the 2020 election.
Trump and Kushner are the latest members of the Trump administration to reportedly receive a subpoena. Last week, former Vice President Mike Pence also received a subpoena from Smith. Attorneys representing Pence are expected to fight the subpoena by arguing that their client should be covered by the “speech or debate clause,” which shields congressional officials from testifying on matters related to their work. However, it is unclear how this argument will be held up in court because it is an argument that has not been extended beyond the presidency in modern times.
Trump and Kushner have not issued a public statement regarding the matter. At this time, it is unclear if Smith has plans to subpoena other ranking members of the Trump administration.
