On Saturday, Seimone Augustus was honored with a statue on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Placed outside of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, Augustus is the first member of the university’s women’s basketball program to receive such an honor.
“So many people were involved in this journey,” Augustus said, per ESPN.
“I didn’t do this alone. A lot of the female athletes here from my time were an inspiration. We were all going on our own race, our own journey, and I do stand here proudly as a representation of all those women. So many great female athletes have come through LSU that have made statements in their respective sports. I won’t be the last one that will be acknowledged.”
Augustus did not only attend LSU, but she is also a Baton Rouge native. Before going off to win four WNBA titles, she led her hometown Tigers to three consecutive Final Four appearances while winning national player of the year honors in her junior and senior years. Ultimately, her jersey was hung in the rafters above the court she once played on.
